Sec 3 Elective Geography Project

Introduction:
The recent property boom has seen a surge in the prices of luxury homes. Property developers have paid high prices for land in Sentosa at S$1361 per square foot (psf). One luxury home development called Sentosa Cove, is marketed as one of the world's most exclusive oceanfront residential community.

Task:
You will work in groups of four arranged by the teacher.

Your group will be a luxury property developer specializing in waterfront homes.

You will use the internet to research on waterfront housing.

You will use the information you gathered to design a poster or display or video and use the information gathered to create a campaign commercial that can be played in the classroom.

The poster/display/video will be part of your oral presentation along with the commercial.

Your main focus as a group is to convince would-be buyers (your class and teacher) that your property is the most luxurious investment and is safe against all threats of coastal processes and sea level rise due to global warming.

Date of presentation will start the week starting 30 July 2007
Marks will be awarded for Term 4 CA results.

L3 Answer for Elective Geog

Sample of a L3 answer

Using a case study you have studied, describe and explain in detail the causes of deforestation. [8 marks]

Deforestation is known as the permanent clearing and destruction of forests. According to the World Resources Institute (WRI), forests covered 60 million sq km of Earth’s land surface eight thousand years ago. In 2005, only about 50 percent of the original forested area remained. This rapid reduction of forests is mainly due to human activities. Using the case study of Kalimantan, Indonesia as an example, I will describe and explain the causes of deforestation in detail.

The world’s growing population has placed a strain on the need for forest resources. The demand for land also increases. The rate of deforestation is particularly high in less developed countries (LDCs) like Indonesia. Being the forth most populous country in the world with more than 245 million people, the demand for land, materials and jobs in particularly high.

The increase in demand for agriculture land use is one of the main causes of deforestation in Kalimantan. This is due to population pressure as there was a population resettlement programme, which transferred people from overcrowded regions in Java and Sumatra to Kalimantan. The settlers clear the forest to plant commercial crops for a living. Plantation companies clear the forests for their commercially viable cash crops like oil palm.

The growth of the settlements placed a demand on the government to clear the forests for urbanization. Land is required to make way for facilities and amenities like city centres, offices, administrative buildings, etc. This will provide more employment as well. An example of the effect of urbanization is the growth of Balikpapan in east Kalimantan, one of the largest cities with 400 000 people. The protected forest next to it has seen its area reduced by a third from 98 sq km to 35 sq km in only one year.

The need to build transport and communication networks have also encouraged deforestation. In order to provide transportation links, forests are cleared for roads, airport, power lines, etc. The Trans-Kalimantan highway cleared 230 km of land to connect the two main cities of Banjarmasin and Balikpapan. Increased accessibility has also increased the ease for loggers to access more forests, and hence more forests are destroyed.

The growth of industrial activities in Kalimantan has cleared most forests due to the abundance of natural resources like wood and minerals. Heavy logging is the result of the demand for hardwood products for furniture as Indonesian wood is world famous. Minerals like gold and silver are found underneath the Kalimantan forests as well.

In conclusion, the causes of deforestation are mainly due to human activities that are the result of population growth and the growth in demand for the forest to provide land, employment and valuable natural resources. Unless there is better controls and regulation, the forests of Borneo are going to continue to disappear.
